Those people who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do. - Isaac Asimov

There is much to be said in favour of modern journalism. By giving us the opinions of the uneducated, it keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community. - Oscar Wilde

Yes, this is a rant on Kim Komando. I had pretty much forgotten about her except to laugh at her weekly column on our local paper until I saw "Digital Goddess" on her website as a registered trademark.   I have three women friends who deserve this title ten times more than Kim Komando.   I guess the small fact that http://www.digitalgoddess.org/ was registered April 13, 2000 wouldn't cause a dispute, but IANAL. I am sure that her sycophantic employees have convinced her that she is the epitome of the title.

When I first saw her column in the newspaper I looked up some information to see how technical she is.   I have run into too many "computer experts" that are (in reality) computer illiterate.   They got into computers either because they found them interesting, they thought that they could make more money, or because they were bored with their "normal" job and became the "computer expert" at the office so that they would not have to do their normal work.   Her columns suggested that her abilities are little bit better than these "computer experts" I have run into in the past.   Her bio tells us that she is a MIS major who started with computer sales and went to infomercials for herself and AOL (no comment about being affiliated with AOL needed).   I don't see much in her bio about actually having to support / work on or with computers for customers.

One of the things I ran into, however, was her "comparison" of a computer running Microsoft Windows and A Macintosh entitled (couldn't find the original article) "Why Windows has the edge over the Mac" by Kim Komando, Microsoft bCentral (Hmm ... Written for Microsoft, is that a conflict of interest?).   She stepped right into the computer wars and didn't expect to get shot at.   Never admitting that she could be wrong, of course.   Kim Komando goes on to complain that those terrible Macintosh people said terrible things to her.   I posted a message to her on her web page explaining my position and (of course) did not receive a response except an automated one.   Other organizations also wrote critical but calm comments on her column, but that aspect was also ignored by her.   She obviously is not familiar with trolls and how to ignore them.

I really don't see how Kim Komando can continue to call herself a computer expert, much less a "Digital Goddess".   When she has programmed for a living, supported customers or done some down and dirty SQL queries then I might agree that she can refer to herself as technically competent.   Digital Goddess is pushing it.
